Back in 2015, TAG Heuer unveiled the Carrera 01, setting a whole new direction for the famous line of racing chronographs. The Carrera Heuer-01 is big, it's a little brash, and instead of having a streamlined black-and-white look it shows off Viral Tech Challenges the movement though a mostly transparent dial. But today TAG is offering an evolution of the Heuer-01, sizing it down to an ever-so-slightly-more-modest 43mm.This watch is all about the new dial treatment, and Lange has done a great job in that department. The black looks so sleek with both the white and pink gold case options, and the white-on-black date discs are the perfect finishing touch. Honestly, they make this a completely different – and objectively better – watch. The black also acts as a great ground for the moonphase display, which has 852 tiny stars on it in addition to the Moon.The other 50% of the 20 complications are found on the opposite dial in ebony. The two dials subtly mirror each other visually, like night and day, or "dark mode" on a modern iPhone application. The bright rose-gold dial is referenced on the ebony dial by the warm hue of rose gold hands and a salmon-tone annual display window. The ebony dial takes the form of a four-register design and is surprisingly legible given how much information is displayed.Auction fans will remember that in 2018, during both its Geneva and Hong Kong auctions, Phillips did sell two possibly unique Rolex GMT-Master ref. 6542 models – one in the classic Pepsi configuration, and another in gold with a brown bezel (both without crown guards). But it is highly likely that these were commissioned pieces. In fact, the gold model seems to have been an issued watch.
