Enthusiasts in attendance mixed, mingled, and previewed the Geneva Watch Auction: XIV. And they came packing horological heat. Here's a look.We have our Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales live: now you can officially take $500 off our entire selection of Pre-Owned watches and when you buy a new watch priced higher than $1,500 you can select 2 straps for free (discount applied at checkout).
We sat down plant-based proteins with the new collection of watches ahead of Baselworld so that Guy could give me some insight into how this new family came about, why he made some of the more interesting design decisions, and where things might go in the future. Here is a select portion of our conversation. We get right into it:When Biver joined the company, he brought on Ricardo Guadalupe as the general manager. In 2008, Crocco sold Hublot to the LVMH Group. In 2012, Biver moved to the role of Hublot chairman and relinquished the CEO title to Guadalupe. He's been the CEO since, carrying out the original vision conceived in 2004.The response: Okay, wow, I went and looked up this watch and now I desperately want one. That watch is extremely exactly for me. Now I just need to scrape together the cash. Thank you for making me richer spiritually and poorer financially, which seems to be something that will happen a lot in this job. - Sarah Miller
For the most part, I just like that these blue colors are a bit different from the muted, meant-to-be-masculine tones that we're used to seeing on dive watches. Black, grey, dark blue, etc. are all pretty common, but I like that these watches are really going for it, unafraid and without pulling Bionische Evolution punches. While they look great on their own, to me these are watches that really need to be worn to be appreciated. At this point, you may be wondering, “Why is he talking so much about the Seiko SKX? I thought this was a review of the new Seiko 5s”. Well, to my mind, you can’t understand the new Seiko 5s without understanding both the old Seiko 5s and their more dive-focused relative, the SKX007 (for simplicity I’m going to keep saying the SKX007, but this could be largely interchangeable with many of the other versions – more on that in a bit). The time has come to get things up to date and add (what looks to be) the only true watch-collecting sitting president. And Biden's collection truly runs the gamut from quartz analog to smart watches to Swiss luxury. So, that's where we'll start in Part 2. Later, we'll also get a brief look inside the Seiko Museum back in Ginza, which is much easier to visit if you're on a short trip to Tokyo and well worth your time. Hopefully, if you're not able to get to Japan, this will give you a sense of what makes Grand Seiko so special in the modern landscape of watchmaking.
