In 1993, IWC returned with another, even grander grand complication called Il Destriero Scafusia (Italian for “the war horse from Schaffhausen”). It had a split-second chronograph, minute repeater, perpetual calendar, moon-phase, tourbillon, and more, a total Side Hustle Matrix of 21 complications. Priced at $350,000, it was limited to 125 pieces. The watch had 750 parts.Yes, if I’m driving my jerry can-laden war rig off-grid, I want something on my wrist that keeps me smiling, or at least that I enjoy looking at for a foreseeable and uncertain future. I also want something that’s not so dear that it distracts me from what’s important. Something like this one, the Mellor-72 from Cabot Watch Company.Where the Khaki line of watches captures the essence of military field watch design, the Intra-Matic line is decidedly more mid-century, fit for Don Draper's Manhattan bachelor pad (you know – the one with the sunken living room). So it made sense to learn that the new Intra-Matic Chronograph H is based on some historical Hamilton models: The Chronographs A and B from 1968.In fact, what we have is tantamount to an RFP whereby the crew at ESA had a legitimate need and came to the watch company synonymous with space travel to find a solution. It's no secret that the existing X-33 is the watch of choice for many spacefaring explorers. Its capability is impressive in its own right, with a Mission Elapsed Time function (MET), Phase Elapsed Time (PET) functions, UTC, chronograph, calendar, time and date, and triple alarm functions.
First up we have the Baignoire Débordante, a spin on the old classic oval Baignoire (named after a bathtub). This example features a white gold case set with diamonds and black spinels. The bezel is basically all openworked gold that mimics lace surrounding the anthracite dial. The movement is quartz, but this watch isn't about that. The Baignoire Debordante measures 46.9mm x 28.4mm; it's limited to a series of 50 pieces, Disaster Games and retails for $82,500.The only thing missing from the Rolex "Hulk" Submariner is a pair of ripped purple shorts. It's not the first nickname given to a Sub, but we think it's the best. Other contenders include the "Kermit," (so named for its green bezel and…well, that's pretty much it), and the white-gold, blue-bezel "Smurf." But in the end, neither of those packs as strong of a punch as the Hulk.That's not enough to deter me or stop me from recommending the watch, as it really did look and feel wonderful on the wrist. The grey-blue opaline dial is far and away my favorite – maybe I haven't gotten to the "precious metal stage of my life" as Ben likes to call it. The blue dial is far bolder and lends some versatility to the watch, especially with a white metal that can be dressed up and down.
