Saskatoon city police handed out nearly 100 tickets over the weekend during a plan implemented to stem the number of traffic complaints received from the public.

In a news release, police said numerous complaints have been made over the past several months regarding vehicles gathering in locations across the city and participating in aggressive driving, excessive noise and a lack of physical distancing.

Due to several planned vehicle gatherings taking place on the weekend and the influx of ongoing complaints, officers executed an enforcement plan that encompassed seven different locations and found that drivers were regrouping at various other locations after police would break up the gatherings, the release stated.

Police said at one point around 140 drivers were racing and driving dangerously at just one of these gathering places.

“We can’t wait for these types of dangerous driving behaviours to result in tragedy to take action,” said staff sergeant Devon Racicot of the traffic unit.

“Moving forward, we will continue to monitor these types of events and take the necessary action to keep Saskatoon roads safe for all users.”

The release noted that throughout the weekend police received more than 25 calls about aggressive driving.

The weekend crackdown resulted in 89 tickets, 15 vehicle equipment regulation infractions, instructions for three vehicles to undergo inspections and one 30-day driving suspension. Five vehicles were also seized for racing and another six were impounded for 30 days.

Police also charged one person with dangerous driving.
