Jessica Alba Might Just Make You Want to Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets Dark Blue

On September 8, Jessica Alba posted a photo from inside her spacious kitchen—one that any celebrity chef would want to broadcast out of. In the photos, Alba compares her height to that of her 12-year-old daughter Honor’s. She captioned the pic, “The moment you realize your number 1 baby is taller than you.”

Behind mom and daughter, Alba’s dark blue kitchen cabinets steal the show. Paired with white zellige tile backsplash and light marble countertops, Alba’s Farrow & Ball “Down Pipe” blue lower cabinets are an unexpected pop of color that still read as neutral.  

Described as a “lead grey” with “blue undertones,” “Down Pipe” by Farrow & Ball is a color “originally inspired by the color used to paint downpipes and guttering,” per the paint company’s website, but it has since “been embraced for inside the home with fanatical zeal!”

Farrow & Ball’s site continues, “This daringly dark hue is fabulous as a background to art, and extremely effective for use in halls to create a deeply dramatic entrance to the home.”

The blue hue deepens and warms the already dark gray color, and when paired with warm-toned accents, like Alba’s copper kitchen hood, “Down Pipe” creates a rich, luxe atmosphere.

Plus, going blue—and dark blue, at that— in the kitchen is “fanatical” and definitely creates a space to remember.

If you’re in the mood to go blue in the kitchen, take a page from Alba’s book and try a neutral-toned, dark blue first. A rich gray-blue, or even black-blue, can ground your room and allow your hardware, backsplash, and dishware to pop. As long as you keep the rest of your scheme light and warm, you won’t feel sucked into the darkness—that is, unless that’s the feel you’re going for.
