A house where human remains were discovered Tuesday in Saskatoon was the site of a fire that was intentionally set last month, Saskatoon police confirmed.
The house in the 400 block of Avenue G South was boarded up when firefighters were called there on Aug. 22 and found visible smoke coming from the front of the structure, according to a media release issued after the incident.
Firefighters located and removed a live cat from the basement, which was left in a neighbour’s care until animal control officers could retrieve it.
“There were no occupants found in the structure and no injuries occurred as a result of this incident,” stated a media release issued after the fire.
Police found human remains inside the house on Tuesday evening after receiving information that an injured or deceased person may be there, according to a police news release issued on Wednesday.
A police spokeswoman said when the information was received is part of the ongoing investigation.
The major crimes unit has ruled the death a homicide. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
