One of the most common misconceptions is that blogging on your own site is going to help your SEO. The days of hiring freelancers to create hundreds of small keyword-stuffed articles are over. Though search engine rankings keep on changing from time to time (it’s normal), make sure that you have built your site in the right way and regularly posting quality content to drive a steady stream of traffic to your pages. The meta description is not a ranking factor, but it does play an important part in optimizing your Click Through Rate (CTR).

Focus on performance, user experience, and content

Page load speed is also a ranking factor, especially for mobile. I think that ranking number one these days, is more about market share and visibility than just ranking number one for an industry term. “Dwell time” is the amount of time visitors spend on your website and it can affect SEO ranking. When you provide useful content, visitors tend to stay longer on your website to consume the information and therefore increase the dwell time. The quality of the content is vastly important to SEO. How well-written is it? Is it riddled with spelling and grammatical errors or is it error-free?

Repeat keywords in your abstract and throughout the article

Many webmasters see Panda as a type of Google penalty—but it's not, really. Panda is a collection of measurements Google is taking of your web pages to try and give your pages a rating on how happy users are likely to be with those pages. When your website or website’s content gets shared on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, and YouTube, it is considered a social signal or citation. Many marketers talk about the specifics of algorithms, content updates, spider-bots etc, but there’s no need for many business owners to worry too much about this. All you need to do to focus is assume that search engines want to get the most relevant articles, posts and products in front of an audience. Picking the right keywords to optimize for is very important. Usually, it’s a good idea to pick mid-tail keywords, including the local area you are focusing on.

Quick Wins

If you are focused on a local market, it is also important to get connected with local businesses and organizations. Ensure that your site loads quickly, not just where you're located, but from around the world. Make sure that your code is valid, in some instances bad code can lead to search engines not being able to properly read a page. Use the W3C validator to check your markup. Gaz Hall, from SEO Hull, had the following to say: "Each algorithm change brings the search engine closer to its intended purpose. It’s getting harder and harder to “game the system” with exploitive linkbuilding strategies and blackhat SEO."

It Pays To Be Connected

First and foremost, the content on your website must be well-written, free of grammatical errors, and 100% unique and original. Content must read smoothly and give visitors the information they are searching for. Google has devoted a great deal of time preventing people from using links to manipulate its algorithms in order to obtain higher SERPs. When you are trying to get more links you need to think about quality, not all links are created equal and links from low quality sites will have little or no impact on your rankings. When it comes to choosing keywords, it’s important that they are not too specific or too broad.
