Description
"In what way would apps on your portable devices increase your German learning ability?" My students will have to spark their curiosity and engage themselves in trying to find applications about German language learning and not only, to download on their devices and try them out, exchange opinions, make serious use of them and showing results, present them in class..
Aims
My Aim is to make my students more active in learning the German language in class by using their devices, something that it is forbitten in my country, but also something that makes them happy and enthusiastic. They will have to find suitable apps about German language learning, which they would access after we have completed the learning material our curriculum demands. This project would be a consolidation phase to strengthen the intended knowledge, understanding, and skills they already have and the ones they will get while working on and with these apps.

Lets do Group-work!

In this first phase of the project, we will be divided in small groups. I think four groups with 3 students each, is a comfortable working strategy. Every group will be named after the Αpp they will choose later on to work with.

We will use the BYOD method, so most of my students bring their devices in class and they start doing the research about suitable German language learning apps, that they like, can handle and download.

Then I will introduce them to Prezi, a very good asynchronous collaboration tool, make them administrators by sending them an invitation through their mails, later after class and define their space on the prezi board, where they will work on, upload all their thoughts, images, video (apps tutorials for example), etc. They will have to name their space on the prezi board after the app, they have chosen to work with.

At home they will have to accept the prezi invitation, start doing some research of their own and practise with the various apps. They must upload on the prezi board the various apps they have finally found and will be working with and give a notice which one is their preferred one, so that the other groups will know. For some help I will send them in this invitation mail a link, about 13 German learning apps. They could get inspired...

In this phase the students must get together as groups and try the apps out, how they function and work. I will participate at every group discussion, giving guidance if asked, because mostly I am aware of most of these apps. I give them some tasks as a homework, i.e. to practise on the first two stages of the app progression and to notice their knowledge development in comparison to their knowledge development at school, or to investigate how much vocabulary they gain working with these apps, in comparison with the vocabulary they gain during the German lessons at school.

For the next two weeks their task will be to practise about 15' every day with these apps and notice: 'The best apps: - focus on doing one thing and doing it well, instead of claiming that they can teach you how to be awesome at listening, reading, speaking and writing AND grammar - deliver on their promises - keep your attention - run well and focus on allowing you to learn instead of piling on features that only slow your phone or tablet's performance - understands that you're often looking at the app on a small phone screen and you work with an on-screen keyboard - are interesting, relevant and fun when it comes to their content - encourage that addictive quality to keep you coming back and building good habits"

At school for 10' in every lesson they will exchange in groups their observations about these apps, exchange thoughts, measure results, if they take part at quizzes, etc.

Finally during the same discussion phase and for 10' more, they will have to collaborate all the groups together to get prepared for their presentation at the end of the school year. I would assist them in creating their presentations, take photos or video during their work and help them, in case they have some problems.

This hour is a critical one: every group will present to the other ones their project. Every group will be assessest from the other ones by using a Rubric I hand them over. They should be very careful and cautious following instructions, if in the reviewer role and very correct, communicative and accurate in their presentations, if in the reviewee role.

For the next 15' they will have to discuss in groups the feedback they got from the other peers and try to correct their work.

We will invite the two other German learning levels of the same class and every group will present their particular App. Our visitors will be divided in small groups and will choose an App to practise with on a particular stage, i.e. vocabulary, grammar, expressions, etc.

Every group from our visitors will have to answer to a questionnaire, that my students have prepared, focussing on our DQ "In what way would this particular app on your portable devices increase your German learning ability?". The answers will be investigated and the statistics from Google forms uploaded on the Prezi board.

It is time to celebrate! Our project has come to an end and after a deep discussion over the gained feedback, we summarize the results and upload them on the Prezi, so that anyone has the chance to observe our project.
