Description
“What if I were you?” is a project about raising awareness about the situation of newly arrived migrants and refugees at school. Students get to know their school mates who come from different countries and create a good relationship and a warm environment in the classroom.
Aims
Students though activities will be in the newcomers’ position and develop a deeper understanding of diverse cultural backgrounds or world views.

    Students will separate in 4 groups of 5. They will find info about the countries the migrants and refugees come from. They will find geographical, historical and other important information and explain the reasons why someone is forced to leave his/her country.

    Each group will collaborate and find on Google maps the places they come from. They will share information and create a short storytelling through pictures and photos from now and then.

    Newly arrived migrants will tell their personal story and discuss the similarities and differences of their cultures (language, religion, customs, feasts, clothes). Each group will share the results with the others.

    Students will search for a special feast, a custom and a story of the migrants’ and refugees’ country to share with their school mates.

    Pupils will simulate the refugees’ situation getting into their position. How would they feel if they had to leave their country? What would they take with them in an imaginary bag? Where would they flee? With what criteria they would choose a new country? What challenges would there be to reach the new country? How other people would like to treat them when they arrived? Groups will share their results.

    They will produce an intercultural e-book with all stories using a web2.0 tool like My Storybook. They can cook a special dish or write a cook book with special menus from their countries.
