The current number of confirmed cases of mumps at Syracuse University has risen now to 24, health officials reported Monday. The number of probable cases is now 26.

SU Health Services previously reported on Friday that 22 cases of the virus had been confirmed and that there were 19 probable cases. Now, the number of confirmed cases have increased by ten in just the past week.

Last week, SU officials called the recent rash of cases at the university an "outbreak." The majority of cases affect members of the university's lacrosse team, which has been shut down for the semester.

Students diagnosed have been isolated and the university has made arrangements to educate them.

Ways to prevent the spread of mumps

  • Don’t share drinks or eating utensils.
  • Cover your mouth/nose when coughing or sneezing.
  • Refrain from kissing and other intimate activity.
  • Don’t share cigarettes and e-cigarettes.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces like sinks, doorknobs and tables.
  • At the first sign of symptoms, visit a doctor

What are the symptoms of mumps?

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Tiredness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swollen and tender salivary glands under the ears on one or both sides

If you have been exposed to mumps, you should avoid exchanging body fluids with anyone. The incubation period is usually 16 to 18 days after exposure.
