Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract; Does It Really Work Or Is It Just Hype?

Pure green coffee bean extract has been one of the greatest discoveries made in helping thousands of people lose weight. On 9/10/2012, Dr. Oz on his show addressed the issue of people using his celebrity status to sell their product. Let me make this clear, Dr. Oz does not endorse nor is he getting paid to advertise anything on this blog. This article is for your information only to help you make a wise choice when choosing to buy whatever brand of Green Coffee Bean Extract. These green coffee beans do work but not all brands are created equal so continue reading.

During the early part of 2012 Dr. Oz did an experiment with the people in his audience to prove the efficacy of green coffee beans. This study that was conducted with the audience was not an outside study done that was dependent on someone else’s data. This experiment was done in-house with other MDs that were chosen by Dr. Oz. Almost 100 people from the Dr. Oz audience participated in this experiment. Dr. Oz explains that green coffee bean extract is so important for weight loss because it helps you to burn fat faster. It works best when it is in its green plant form. Its fat burning properties are destroyed when the beans are roasted. So you can’t lose weight from brewing the coffee beans and drinking it. Dr. Oz says that what makes this extract work is not the caffeine because the supplement itself is virtually caffeine free. There are antioxidants in green coffee bean extract that melt the fat away. So how much weight can you lose taking this supplement, you ask? Keep on reading I’m getting there.

To get the science right to get the most accurate results from this experiment, Dr. Oz consulted with a medical advisory board which consists of weight loss experts, nutritionist, and top researchers in this field. Two of these specialists were on the Dr. Oz show. They were Dr. Carolyn Apovian who is a director of the Center for Nutrition & Weight Management and Kristin Kirkpatrick MS, RD, LD a Wellness Manager for the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute. Dr. Apovian explained how they conducted the study.

Dr. Apovian stated that this coffee bean has not been studied well on its effects on humans so they wanted to be safe by choosing people that were similar. The types of people that were chosen were:

  • Women between the ages of 35-49 who needed to lose weight
  • So their BMI or body mass index had to be between 25-45 nothing too big
  • These women had to be reasonable healthy with no history of diabetes
  • No women were chosen who had a history of a heart attack or stroke
  • These women could not be pregnant or breast feeding

The researchers wanted the control group and the group who got the actual supplement and not a placebo to be as similar as possible so that they could really test the effect of green coffee bean extract. Dr. Kirkpatrick asked everyone who participated in the experiment to make a food log. This was important because she wanted to see was the weight loss attributed to the coffee beans or was it attributed to other factors in their diet. Dr. Kirkpatrick did not want that added element of removing calories from their diet. So she wanted them to eat as they normally would every day to make sure that if they lost weight, it was due to the extract and not their diet. So in other words, the participants ate what they wanted.

The first step in this experiment was to find green coffee bean extract in its pure form. Half of the audience testers received the green coffee bean extract and the other half received a placebo. Neither group knew what they got because all of the bottles and pills were the same. With each bottle included a set of instructions on when and how to take the pill and a link to a regular food log so that the participants could log what they ate on the website. This was mandatory. They did not need to make any dietary or any lifestyle changes.

Before the participants took their first pill, Dr. Oz’s medical team recorded thirty of the women’s starting weight, waist size, blood pressure, and heart rate. For two weeks Dr. Oz and his medical team followed the testers as they documented their daily routine. Some women have had struggled with their weight for years, others were binge dieters and never lost any weight. Others have unhealthy eating habits and they know it but still want to lose weight. They are all looking for something that will help them lose weight and gradually help them to eat better with the help of this little green capsule.
